This past Saturday, April 30, after the conclusion of the 2022 National Football League (NFL) Draft, former Texas Tech Red Raider and Taylor alum Damarcus Fields signed as an undrafted free agent with the league’s New Orleans Saints.
Fields joins “Who Dat Nation”, the moniker of the New Orleans Saints, after a successful college career at Texas Tech University. Fields completed his Red Raider career with 224 tackles (182 solo), 13.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, four fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and 45 passes defended. He ranked second among Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players at the end of the season for career passes defended, and his 45 passes defended marked the most for a Red Raider over his career dating back to 2000. Fields was selected to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl following the season in Paradise, Nevada.
Fields was one of three Texas Tech players to receive invitations to the 2022 NFL combine in Indianapolis this past February. At the combine, Fields clocked a 4.48 40-yard dash time and had a vertical jump of 34.50’.
At his pro day workout, Fields recorded a 37’, a broad jump of 119 feet, 11 bench press reps, a 4.29 second shuttle sprint and a 6.95 three-cone event.
Fields was one of 17 undrafted rookies that signed with the New Orleans Saints following the conclusion of the NFL draft.
Last season, the Saints finished 9-8 barely missing the playoffs. This season, the Saints will play not only the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams, but the defending AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals as well. Starting this season, the Saints will be led by Dennis Allen as their coach following the departure of Sean Payton.
