This past weekend, April 29-30, the 2022 University Interscholastic League (UIL) held the regional track and field meets. Taylor participated in League City while Thrall and Granger traveled to Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
Five local athletes qualified to participate in the 2022 UIL state track and field championships Thursday-Saturday, May 12-14, at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
From Taylor, Jarvis Anderson and Christian Rohlack qualified for the state meet. Anderson will forego the state meet as he is currently participating in the Deaflympics in Brazil. Anderson finished Region 3-4A 110-meter hurdles champion with a time of 14.05 and also Region 3-4A 300-meter hurdles champion with a time of 37.42.
Rohlack is now a back-to-back regional champion and state qualifier. He qualified in the boys 800-meter run with a season best of 1:58.19.
Avery Koonce also returns to the state meet this year. Koonce qualified after finishing second in the girls 100-meter dash with a time of 12.71. Freshman runner Sarah Beth Laurence continues to impress on the track continuing her success from cross country this past fall as she qualified for state as a wildcard with a third-place finish in the girls 1,600-meter run. Laurence finished with a time of 5:39.49.
Sophomore Lucas Matta will be the lone Granger Lions competing at the state meet. Matta placed second in the boys 400-meter dash with a time of 51.13 to qualify for the state meet.
