Former Taylor Duck and recent Texas Tech graduate Damarcus Fields spent the weekend at home with his family waiting to see if his name was called in the 2022 National Football League (NFL) Draft.
Fields came into the week end calm and collected not worried about when or if he would get selected.
“I’m just waiting for the day really,” said Fields. “I’m excited for myself for the city of Taylor for the little kids as well. I’m living out a childhood dream.”
The uncertainty of this weekend will not deter Fields if the NFL passes on him. Fields feels there is more to life than the game.
“If I wasn’t fortunate enough to play in the NFL, I’m prepared to expand my options,” said Fields. “I put my body through a lot. Football is a rough professional sport. I feel I’m bigger than football. It’s NFL or no football.”
If one of the league’s 32 teams say yes to Fields, he is ready to charge head-on into the NFL.
“I feel like I belong there. I’m just waiting to find my next home. I’m excited,” said Fields. “I feel like I’m halfway there I still have a lot of things to do. I’ve got goals within the league as well. I just can’t wait to achieve them.”
Fields commented about his time in Indianapolis at the combine and the all-star game he also participated at in Las Vegas.
“It was amazing. It was a unique experience,” said Fields. “It was one of my dreams as well, just to go to the NFL combine just to be able to compete and showcase my skills.”
Fields shared his advice to younger athletes and the path they should follow for success.
“One thing I realized coming up was to listen to my parents follow God and follow your faith,” said Fields. “Just work hard. Find the balance between school and football.”
The 87th NFL Draft kicked off this past Friday, April 28, from Paradise, Nevada, and Fields finished saying, “You never know how it goes. It’s never a perfect draft.”
