Ahead of a bond election that could help fund construction of a new high school, Granger Independent School District has determined its location.

On March 9, the Granger ISD board of trustees voted unanimously to purchase additional land for the district at the March board meeting. The property is 42.25 acres located near F.M. 971 between county roads 348 and 349.

“GISD is very fortunate to be able to purchase this plot of land,” said Tommy Filla. Granger ISD board president. “It’s in a great location with enough acreage to serve our needs well into the future.”

This land purchase was made with district funds and is not a part of the upcoming bond election, which also proposes a land purchase.

March’s land purchase by the school board come one month after member unanimously called for a $44 million bond election May 7. In addition to items such as a new football stadium and renovations to facilities, a new high school is in the proposal.

“We had the long-term facilities planning committee meeting together to talk about the aging facilities and the growth that’s happening in Granger, and essentially right now, the bond is about the growth and the projected growth for the amount of students that we’re going to have in the next 5-10 years, easily,” said Neatherlin. “We have a 20% growth rate over the last year and a half, so that’s something we have to address as we move forward with all of the companies that are moving in in the area, this bond address those needs.”

If passed, the bond would result in a tax increase of 35 cents per $100 valuation. The total tax rate would then be $1.26. The increase would not affect citizens ages 65 and older with a homestead and exemption application filed through the Williamson County Appraisal District.
