The Taylor baseball team won their eighth straight game, against the Jarrell Cougars, to stay atop the district 19-4A standings on Tuesday, April 5, 7-3.
Taylor jumped on top in the second inning, posting a 4-0 lead over the Cougars. Chris Perez walked to leadoff the inning. Aiden Aguero then doubled Perez home for Taylor’s first score. Jackson Schroeder was then hit by a pitch to reach base. Matthew Aplin then singled to load the bases for the Ducks. Aguero would score via a Nick Treuter sacrifice fly that gave Taylor a 2-0 lead. Dominick Hartman then doubled home Schroder and Aplin for the second pair of Taylor runs.
By the end of the fourth inning Jarrell had drawn closer cutting the lead to 4-3 before the Ducks scored additional runs in the final three innings.
In the fifth inning, Jacob Adame singled home Hartman. In the sixth inning, Schroeder scored via a sacrifice fly by Ashton Vega. Adame crossed home plate in the seventh inning when Schroeder grounded into a fielder’s choice.
Devin Valdez pitched 3 1/3 innings and struck out four batters. Matthew Aplin came on in relief and gave up three hits and struck out six.
The Ducks continued their quest for the district title on Friday, April 8, as they completed the season sweep of Jarrell 6-1.
The Ducks could wrap up the district title as early as Tuesday, April 12, when they host Lake Belton.
