BRYAN – Saturday was another do-or-die game for the Thrall Tigers.
In the contest, they managed to overpower the Iola Bulldogs in almost comfortable fashion en route to a 7-2 victory, securing their spot in the Class 2A, Region IV quarterfinals.
When Iola (25-4) tied the game in the bottom of the third inning 2-2, it appeared – for a moment – that the Tigers (20-10) were in another fight to the end. However, the runs continued to fall the Tigers' way in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Caden Leschber got things started for Thrall in the top of the third. With two outs lingering, he doubled to drive in Jeremy Cain and Cayden Watson for the first runs of the game.
With a single and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, Iola tied things up. The thoughts of a dogfight ended rather quickly, though, as the Tigers regained the lead in the top of the fourth when Justin Hammack hit a two-out single, driving in Luke Williams for a 3-2 lead.
From there, it was all Thrall. In the top of the fifth inning, once again with two outs lit up on the board, the Tigers broke out big when Williams reached on an error by the right-fielder, scoring Leschber and Tyler Lee to push the lead to 5-2.
In the seventh inning Thrall added two more runs as Williams crossed the plate for the second time in the contest along with Braeden West. Once again, the Tigers achieved the runs with two outs to seal the Game 3 win and a trip to the regional quarterfinals.
They will open up a best-of-three series with Evadale (17-8) on Thursday at Premiere Fields in Tomball.
