Matchups such as this one are always intensely entertaining. Friday night at Gupton Stadium in Cedar Park the “Black Rain” defense of the #10 Timberwolves went toe-to-toe against #6 Hutto. The game came down to the closing two minutes with Cedar Park coming away with the victory 20-16.
The defenses of both teams came to play hard and that they did. The Hippos got on the board first when Hippos QB Grayson Doggett completed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Landyn Watson. Cedar Park would get on the board in the second quarter on a 21-yard field goal. With 54 seconds remaining in the 1st half the Hippos would regain the lead on a field goal of their own, taking a 10-3 lead. 20 seconds later Cedar Park would strike for a 62-yard touchdown leveling the score into halftime 10-10.
In the third frame the teams would trade field goals and enter the fourth quarter in a 13-13 tie. Early in the final quarter Hutto kicker Evan Gutierrez would add his third field goal of the night giving the Hippos a 16-13 lead with 10:37 remaining in the game.
Back and forth the defenses went until the final two minutes of the game. With 1:38 remaining Cedar Park QB Ryder Hernandez would rush for the go ahead score from 14 yards out. The Hippos had one last possession, but the four straight passes all fell incomplete.
The Hippos had 271 yards of total offense 171 yards passing and 100 on the ground. Doggett was 14/27 for 184 yards and 1 touchdown. Kendall Williams led in rushing for the Hippos with 81 yards and Dajon Harrison shined once again with 3 catches for 107 yards.
