Another local student athlete will be taking flight this fall, but not from high school but in his senior year at Division III Trinity University.
Former Granger Lion Wyatt Messex will be wrapping up his final year as QB for the Tigers while completing his major in finance.
Trinity University is in the Southern Athletic Association Conference (SAAC) and concluded the 2019 season tied with Berry College for the SAAC championship.
In his freshman year Messex played in seven games and completed 5-9 passes for 85 yards. He also rushed 11 times for 125 yards, finishing third on the team with 4 rushing touchdowns.
Messex’s first collegiate passing touchdown came against Sewanee on Oct. 21, 2017 and his first collegiate rushing touchdown came against Redlands on Sept. 2, 2017.
Sophomore year Messex was named 2018 All-SAAC Honorable Mention, and led the team completing 114-204 passes for 1,672 yards and 20 touchdowns, while finishing third on the team with 249 yards rushing on 78 carries and 2 rushing touchdowns.
Messex had a season-high 251 yards passing against Berry on Nov. 10, 2018, and had a season-high 4 touchdown passes against Hendrix Oct. 27, 2018
Last year Messex received 2019 All-SAAC Honorable Mention, 2019 SAAC Academic Honor Roll
Again, he led the Tigers by completing 160-267 passes, for a career-high of 2,036 yards 26 touchdowns.
He earned a career-high 273 yards passing against Sewanee on Oct. 26 and had a career-high 5 touchdown passes against McMurry on Sept. 5. In addition, Messex was named team MVP for the 2019 season.
Messex did all of this while playing with a severely separated right shoulder at the 4th game of the 2019 season proving to his school and community that he is all Lion and all heart as his finishes his career at Trinity and moves on to the next chapter in life.
