Last Friday, September 13, the Granger Lions offense came to play, and play they did. With Thomas Rhoades at the helm, they were able to convert 9 of their 12 possessions into touchdowns, leading the Lions to a 62-0 victory over the Meridian Yellowjackets, bringing their record to 3-0 in the 2019 season.

The first score of the game was a 3-yard touchdown run by Johnny Ryder, who had 38 rushing yards on 3 carries and 2 receiving touchdowns on 3 receptions. While enduring a minor hiccup on their second possession—losing a fumble—the Lions rebounded and were able to capitalize on Meridian’s turnovers, taking a 55-0 lead by halftime, scoring 8 touchdowns on successive possessions.

The Lions offense commanded the field with 20 first downs, 14 of those being on the ground. In the game Granger collected 422 yards of total offense despite possessing the ball for half the amount of time of Meridian. Quarterback Thomas Rhoades completed 83% of his passes for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns. Running Back Donnie Cantwell had a big night scoring 3 touchdowns on just 4 rushing attempts for 58 rushing yards. Carlos Reyna added 72 yards on 3 catches and also totted the rock for 37 yards.

Granger’s defense was also effective, getting Meridian to cough the ball up 4 times and holding Meridian to a menial 40 total yards of offense. Travis Miller lead the team with 5 tackles helping the defense to force Meridian to punt 3 times in the first quarter.

The Lions will play away from home for the first time this season against Bruceville-Eddy on Friday, September 20, at 7pm.
