Through the 2019 season ended a bit bittersweet the Granger Lions football team accomplished so much. The team played every game to the end living up to their motto Finish Strong. This past weekend the All District and Academic Accomplishments were released.
Senior RB Carlos Reyna finished the season with over 1,500 yards rushing and 26 touchdowns to contribute to his teams 9-4 season. For this, he was named District 13-2A DII Offensive MVP. He averaged over 6 yards per carry and over 130 yards per game on the season.
Four members of the team earned 1st Team Offensive Honors QB Junior, Thomas Rhoades, WR Sophomore, Johnny Ryder, OL Junior, Dwayne Gaida and OL Senior, Jake Kaminkow. Ryder and Gaida also earned 1st Team Defensive Honors along with LB Freshman, DJ McClelland and DB Sophomore, Donnie Cantwell.
Seniors led the way in 2nd Team Honors except for Cantwell, who earned 2nd Team Offense for his performance at RB. WR Wyatt Bolding, TE Nathan Flores and OL Bruce Lay rounded out the offense. On defense Flores and Bolding were also recognized alongside LB Senior, Carlos Garza and DB Senior, Jacob Clouse.
Earning Honorable Mention on offense were McClelland, Garza, OL Junior, Noe Gaytan and OL Senior, Ryan Gaswint. Earning Honorable Mention on defense were: DB Senior, Travis Miller, Gaytan, Kaminkow and Lay.
The Academic All District Team included: Garza, Lay, Rhoades, Ryder, Senior, Travis Miller, Junior, Donovan Harwell (Team Manager), Sophomore, Devin Fails, Sophomore, Tyler Tatro, Freshman, Darryl Stefek and Freshman, Tripp Wilkie.
In addition, Garza was named to the THSCA and Army National Guard Academic All State Team and Lay earned Honorable mention.
The hard work both on and off the field by these student athletes is truly a statement that Granger did Finish Strong.
