Hippos defense stifled Waco in the second half of Friday nights win.

On Senior Night, the Hutto Hippos used a 28-point second half to bring home their first win of the 2020 season, beating the Waco Lions 35-21.

 The Lions drew first blood with a 19- yard touchdown pass from Sean Mooney to Braylon Martinez giving Waco a 7-0 lead with 10:20 remaining in the opening quarter.

A while later the Hippos found paydirt on an 8- run by Cyron Miller to tie the game at 7-7.

The tie would not last long as the Lions retook the lead on a 93-yard pass from Mooney to Redmond O’Neal at the 1:37 mark of the first quarter.

Both teams battled back and forth but failed to put any points on the board in the second frame and the halftime score stood at 14-7 Waco.

Receiving the second half kickoff the Hippos took 36 seconds to tie the game once again on a 60-yard pass from Grayson Doggett to Sean Davis.

The Hippos would take the lead for good on a 4-yard run by Miller with 2:43 remaining in the third.

The Hippos would score one more time before the third quarter ended when Doggett tagged Gary Choice for a 52-yard touchdown pass down the left side of the field. The score put the Hippos up 28-14 with 19 seconds left in the third.

As the final quarter got going so did Waco one more time on a 23-yard run from Jaelyn Laster closing the gap and bringing the score to 28-21 in favor of the Hippos.

The icing on the cake score came when Doggett threw his third touchdown of the night from 4-yards out to Evan Gutierrez with 7:05 remaining in the game.

The Hippos tallied 337 yards of total offense 202 through the air and 135 on the ground. Doggett was 12 for 25 with 198 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. Miller led in rushing with 109 yards on 21 totes. Davis led all receivers with 188 yards on 7 grabs.

Penalties plagued both teams as the Hippos were flagged 7 times for 85 yards.

Next week the Hippos are back on the road as they open district play against the Round Rock Westwood Warriors who fell to Lake Travis 63-20.
