Thrall’s Tigerettes (15-9) played their final tournament of the season over the weekend and captured third place in the silver bracket after posting a 3-3 record. They closed out the tournament with a hard fought 25-22, 19-25, 25-12 win over the host Academy Lady Bees on Saturday.
“I thought overall we played pretty well,” said Thrall Coach Bethany Grissom. “We’ve still got some work to do before district play begins in a couple of weeks, but we’re getting there. We always play tough tournaments to help us get better for district and this year was no exception.”
Thrall opened bracket play with Rosebud-Lott who struggled against the Tigerettes falling 25-11, 25-13. The win set up a match with district rival Thorndale in the semifinals. Thrall, who had won 12 of their last 14 meetings with the Lady Dogs, dropped the opening set 22-25, but bounced back to force a third set with a 25-21 win in set two. Thorndale was able to pull away in the final set winning 25-19 to advance to the silver finals against Bremond.
“I don’t like facing district teams in non-district play, but sometimes it can’t be helped,” Grissom said.
In pool play on Saturday the Tigerettes opened with a win over McGregor 25-13, 25-13 before dropping to tough matches to Class 6A Temple 22-25, 25-22, 19-25 and 3A West 25-21, 22-25, 17-25.
“West and Temple were both good teams, but we should have beaten them,” Grissom said. “We are still having those stretches where we are making too many mistakes and when you do that against good teams they are going to take advantage of them.”
The Tigerettes were back on the floor Tuesday night hosting Academy and will close out the non-district portion of their schedule next week when they travel to Gateway on September 3 and Fayetteville on September 6. District 25-2A play begins on Tuesday, September 10 when Thrall travels to Buckholts.
