The Hutto Hippos in their second game without starting quarterback Grayson Doggett tallied only 176 yards of total offense in their 27-13 loss to the visiting Vista Ridge Rangers Friday night.
The opening quarter remained quit until the final minute, when Vista Ridge QB Kyle Brown tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Dayton Bombarger . the 2-point attempt failed, and the Rangers led 6-0.
Moments later the Rangers would toss another 4-yard score, this time from Kwade Hegtvedt to Jacob Bowerman. The PAT made the score 13-0 with 11:47 remaining in the half.
The Rangers would extend their lead even more in the second quarter when Brown and Bombarger connected again, this time from 13 yards out. The PAT sailed through and the Rangers were up 20-0 with 5:50 remaining in the half.
The Hippos finally crossed the goal line just before halftime on a 16-yard run by Will Hammond. Evan Gutierrez’s kick was good and Hutto had cut the lead to less than two scores with 12 seconds remaining until the break.
There was only one score in the third quarter, and it belonged to the Hippos as they cut the lead to seven on a 1-yard touchdown run by Brody Bujnoch. The PAT was blocked and Hutto trailed 20-13 with 2:04 remaining in the third quarter.
Vista Ridge would score the final points of the night on another brown touchdown pass, this time to Alex Berndlmaier from 8 yards out. The PAT solidified the Rangers win at 27-13 with 6:47 to play.
For the Hippos Hammond went 13 for 33 for a meager 72 yards. Cyron Miller was the Hippos leading rusher with 45 yards on 8 carries. Jairiez Lambert led the Hippos in receiving with 2 catches for just 28 yards.
The loss drops the Hippos to .500 overall at 3-3 and in district as well at 2-2. Next Friday the Hippos travel to take on district leader Vandegrift.
