As the cold front rolled in, the Hippos passing game froze stiff as they were picked off 5 times in Friday night’s loss to the visiting Round Rock Dragons 31-7.

It took Round Rock just 18 seconds and one play to get on the scoreboard with a 74-yard touchdown run by Trayvian McCoy-Gay.

After an unsuccessful series by the Hippos, a mishandled snap was recovered in the end zone by the Dragons’ Travien Brown and they took an early 14-0 lead just 2 minutes into the game.

Hutto would get there only score of the night with 8:09 remaining in the opening quarter on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Grayson Doggett to Jairiez Lambert.

The rest of the night would belong to the Dragons, who added another score on a 55-yard run by Israel Morgan in the second quarter’s lone score. The PAT by Round Rock’s Garrett Kalinowski was good and the Dragons headed into the locker room with a firm 21-7 lead.

Early on in the third the Round Rock marched down the field and tacked on three more with a 30-yard field goal by Kalinowski to take a 24-7 lead.

The Dragons sealed the game in the final quarter when a Grayson Doggett’s fifth interception on the night was returned 74-yards by Strong Safety Carson Otworth.

Both teams tallied 277 yards of total offense in the game, but it was the Dragon defense that brought home the victory against the Hippos. The Hippos running game was held to a meager 76 yards.

Doggett finished the night 15 for 41 with 201 yards passing 1 touchdown and 5 picks. Cyron Miller averaged 3.3 yards on 23 carries for 77 yards. Sean Davis led all receivers for the Hippos with 5 catches for 96 yards. The loss drops the Hippos to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in district play. The Hippos will be in action again on Sat. at noon as they travel to Stony Point to face the Tigers.
