The cold outside the gym was neutralized by the heat inside in the Granger Lions 57-46 loss to the Holland Hornets on Tuesday night Feb. 11.
The Lions were down to just 5 players early in the game when Johnny Ryder was ejected for throwing an elbow. Also, Thomas Rhoades missed the first half due to an ankle twist and a collision between teammates Zachary Cabello and Noe Gayton resulted in a split eyebrow and bloody nose.
As for the game itself the Lions struggled in the first half allowing the Hornets to take a 21-13 lead after one. the second quarter is when things began to get chippy. This is when all the incidents occurred. The Lions managed just 5 points in the quarter and found themselves behind 35-18 as the schools headed into the locker room.
In the second half Granger regained their composure and played better, keeping an even keel with the Hornets at 11-11 in third quarter points to bring the score to 46-29. Still down big in the fourth, the Lions continued to fight back and finish strong as they outscored Holland 17-11 in the final 8 minutes.
Carlos Reyna led the Lions with 16 points and 7 rebounds in the game Ryder added 10 more in his limited time on the court.
The Lions need some help to jump into a playoff spot a win over Mumford in the season finale next Tuesday, Feb. 18 would help. Friday night the Lions were on the road to face Johnson in non-district action.
