This year will be the seventh year for our annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The event is set for July 13-14 at Taylor High School.
I’m happy to see that people are still interested in the event. I’m excited to see what type of competition we will get this year.
This will be my first time operating the tournament as the publisher, but I’m not sure how much that will change things.
Just since the story came out last week, someone from out of state has already contacted me. I’ve also received contact from a few people from outside of Taylor.
These are not sponsors, but people who want to play.
I hope this is a sign that we are going to get even more outside participation.
I hope that it drives more people from Taylor to play too. It’s always nice to have local people involved.
I’m a bit behind the curve on seeking out sponsors – I’m coming out to see people very soon – mainly because of my new position. I’m staying quite busy.
With the tournament growing every year, we do need more sponsors. It gets harder and harder every year to reach the bar of the previous year. But, it happens because of the great sponsors we get every year.
I have a few surprises I am working on for this year, and if they come through this may be the best year so far.
Last year, the competition reached a new level – thank God for the referees. I hope this year will raise the bar.
With the heightened level of competition, more attractive prizes and the community feel of the tournament, the main thing is giving back to the local community.
Last year we added a second scholarship, both will be given to students in May. Those scholarships are in addition to a donation to a local nonprofit organization.
This year, we plan to raise enough for two scholarships and send a student to Boys State through the American Legion.
The donations to the community are not just any random thing that comes across my desk. The donation goes to an organization that has been active throughout the year and has helped strengthen the community in some way.
I would love to add a second donation, but that all depends on what kind of participation we get in the future.
Eventually, I have huge plans if the support for the event continues to grow.
It would be really nice to have two weekends of tournament based on players’ ages. One week is adult men and women, and the next week is the younger division.
That’s all just a dream though.
Here’s to lucky number seven, planned for July 13-14. For more information, contact me at 512-352-8535 or email email@example.com.
I’m going to get off my soapbox now and go watch round one of the NBA playoffs.
