Melvin Walde Steger, 81, of Taylor went to be home with his Savior April 20, 2021. Melvin was born May 18, 1939, to Walde and Elsie Steger.
He grew up in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bartlett, where he was baptized, confirmed and married his bride of 61 years. He was a proud Bartlett Bulldog where he participated in every sport and he graduated in 1957.
He grew up on the farm, which is where he developed his hard-working ethic, and that is how he lived his life. He worked 38 years with Alcoa in Rockdale.
In 1959, he married Geraldine Schneider and they moved to Taylor in 1962, where they raised their three children.
It was his dream to be a high school coach. He enjoyed coaching all sports for his children. He was the head coach of the first pop warner football team in Taylor in the 1970s. All those young athletes that had the privilege of being his players in every sport were given a great foundation in athletics and sportsmanship.
Melvin was also an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor and the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge 29 Taylor, serving as the lodge president, hall manager and youth leader for many years, having one of the largest youth groups in the state of Texas.
Dad took great delight in his grandchildren. He attended many football, softball, basketball and baseball games, stock shows and band concerts. Popo was there to support his grand kids.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents Walde and Elsie, and one daughter Tammy Sue Steger.
He survived by his wife, Geraldine; children, Pam and John Harper, Donna and Tim Vanecek and Mark Steger; grandchildren, Ashley and Clyde Cupples, Dustin and Amanda Harper, Kyle, Connor, Collin and Kacie Vanecek and Maddison Steger; brothers, Stevie and Marlene Steger, Stan and Ione Steger, and Dennis and Kathy Steger; brothers-in-law, Kenneth and Pat Schneider, Edward and Barbara Schneider and Ronnie and Phyllis Schneider; and many nephews and nieces.
