James Ray Bridges (Okie)

James Ray Bridges (Okie), 73, of Davilla, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2020.

James (Jimmy) was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma, March 12, 1947, to the late Richard Maurice Bridges and Lucinda Viola Buffington (Byrd).

He graduated from Granger High School and continued is education to receive an associate degree in business management from Temple College. He married Janice Marie Parker Jan. 30, 1970, and they were married for 50 years.

During his time, he was a cook in the military, National Guard and Will-O-Bell, for more than 40 years.

James enjoyed scouting, helping others every minute he could and spoiling his kids and grandkids. He was also actively involved in scouting, assisting boys to earn their Eagle Scout achievement, producing 27 Eagle Scouts from 1984 to 1996. He continued helping Troop 167 and 324 throughout his life. He earned the Silver Beaver Award, the highest council recognition award for distinguished service to youth. He also earned the unofficial first-ever recipient “Silver Jackass Award” (an inside joke).

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1971 and served in the National Guard from 1972 to 1995. During his time in the military, he earned the Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Marksman.

James (Okie) was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Janice; his parents, Richard M. Bridges and Lucinda V Buffington (Byrd); his brother, Robert (Bobby) Dean Bridges; his sister, Diana Ledford (Byrd), his brother, Tommy Byrd; his uncle, Cleo Byrd; and aunt, Lena Bell Bramlett (Byrd).

James (Okie) is survived by his son, Steve Bridges and his wife Lisa of Jarrell; daughter, Lilye Waters and her husband, Chris of Taylor; five grandchildren, Kayla (Bridges) and husband Brandon Scobee of Temple, Shane Bridges of Jarrell, Isac Waters and wife Tatyana (Hogan) of Taylor, Natasha Cyrus of Taylor, and Aaron Waters of Taylor; two great-grandchildren, Connor Scobee and Emmalyn Scobee; sisters, Sonja (Bridges) and husband, Richard Newman of Eufaula, Oklahoma, Janell Williams (Byrd) and husband Jason of Yukon, Oklahoma and Ramona Reyes (Byrd) and husband Stan of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; brother, Alvin Byrd and wife Vicky of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Evelyn Bridges of Chickasha, Oklahoma; nephews, Ricky Newman of Eufaula, Oklahoma, Robert Bridges, Wesley Bridges, and Jonathan Bridges of Chickasha, Oklahoma.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Dec. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Condra Funeral Home in Taylor. A graveside service was held Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 10 a.m. at Granger City Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Marty Ruble, Glen Flint, Allen Dews, and Richard Cervenka.

Ray Ochoa, Jonathan Bridges, Isac Waters, Aaron Waters, Shane Bridges, Brandon Scobee, Brian Parker, Jason Cargill, Marty Ruble Jr, and Shawn Wilbon will serve as pallbearers.
