Joyce Marie Sledge was born June 8, 1952, at The Dickey Clinic in Taylor, to Woodrow and Phelonese Sledge.
God called her home Nov. 16, 2020.
She grew up on Murphy Street apart of the “Murphy Street Crew.”
She professed her life to Christ and united with The First Baptist Church of Taylor, at a young age and remained a faithful member until her health failed.
She started her education at Coupland ISD in Coupland, and soon transitioned to O.L. Price School and Taylor High School in Taylor.
Joyce met and married Edmond Hill in December of 1969.
She started her career in the food industry and later transitioned to the medical field where she was employed at Travis State School as an MHR attendant for over 20 years. After retiring, she devoted her time to caring for her mother and grandmother.
Joyce Marie loved family, attending mission at her church, old school gospel music, watching The Waltons and westerns, and listening to the blues, anything that featured BB King. Her favorite color was red.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow and Phelonese Sledge; grandparents, Andrew and Adell Chambers and Joe and Viola Sledge and Willie Johnson.
She leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Willie Joe Sledge (Christina); her sister, Janice LaFaye Robinson (Herbert); and sister, Bonnie Jean Nzeka, all of Taylor; adopted brother, Kingsley Akiode of Cedar Park; nieces, Janet Fontaine Scales of Round Rock, Anissa Renee Robinson of Georgetown, Sarah Danielle Nzeka of Taylor, Sara Hernandez (Maurice) of Killeen, and “special nephew” Daniel Nzeka Jr. (DJ) of Austin; nephews, Joseph Nzeka of College Station, and Tunde Akiode (Ceceillia) of Temple; four great nephews, Tason Robinson, Tyjamalic Wright, Jaevin and Treylin Wilson; one great niece, Nevaeh Dansby; five “special cousins,” Jerry Brockington, Jimmy Brockington, Gale Williams, Bobbie McLamb and Brenda Hennington; and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. at A Life Celebration by Franklin, 510 S. Main St. in Taylor.
A private family service will be held Monday Nov. 23, at 11 a.m. at The First Baptist Church, 300 N. Robinson St. in Taylor, with Pastor A.L. Watson Sr. officiating.
