The 19th annual Taylor S.P.J.S.T. Lodge #29 barbecue cook-off is scheduled for next weekend, Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28 at the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge, 5025 FM 619 in Taylor.
Last year, 74 teams outlasted the rain and cooked at the annual event. The fifth annual Taylor BBQ Legend Award was presented to Irene Michna on behalf of Taylor SPJST, Taylor Chamber of Commerce, Taylor Rodeo Association and Taylor International BBQ. This award is for someone who has been influential in the barbecue community in the Taylor area.
This year, there will be about $4,000 in prizes awarded to winners.
Categories for the cook-off include chicken, pork ribs, brisket, beans, pork butt and cook's choice.
The main meat categories are brisket, ribs and chicken, while the other categories are optional. Those three categories will payout about $4,000 again this year.
Cash prizes are awarded for first through 10th place in the main categories. Cash and unique trophies will also be awarded for first through third place Master Cook and Best Rig categories.
The Master Cook is chosen by highest total of points from the three main meat categories. A team of judges chooses the winner of the Best Rig award.
In the jackpot beans, cook’s choice and pork butt categories, 80 percent of the money goes back to the cookers.
Cash prizes are awarded for first through fifth place, with trophies for first through tenth places.
The entry fee is $100 for the main meat categories and $10 for each additional category.
Jackpot categories are optional, and the cost to enter everything is $130.
Judges are still needed, and everyone is welcome to judge on Saturday. Judging begins around 9 a.m. Saturday morning and lasts until about 3 p.m.
There will be four tables each with eight judges who will taste bite-size pieces of each entry.
On Friday night, there will be a dance at the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge beginning at 7:30 p.m. featuring Sterling Country. Old-fashioned hamburgers will be available.
The S.P.J.S.T. Youth Club will hold a silent auction from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
