On Friday, Nov. 8, Mayor Brandt Rydell will present the key to the city of Taylor to longtime Taylor business owner Vencil Mares for his many years as an essential part of the city of Taylor small business community. Rydell will also present a Proclamation designating Nov. 10, which is also Mares’ birthday, as “Vencil Mares Day.”
The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. at the Taylor Café, 101 N. Main St.
Mares was born in Cistern and served as a medic in the Army during World War II. After the war, he worked at Southside Market in Elgin before purchasing the building for the Taylor Café in 1948, and the restaurant has been open for more than 70 years.
The Taylor Café has been awarded the Texas Treasure Business Award by the Texas Historical Commission. Mares, as well as the Taylor Café, has been featured in numerous articles including in Texas Monthly. He was also featured in a Chevy commercial aired during the 2014 Super Bowl.
The public is welcome to attend the ceremony honoring Mares.
