Only a few days ahead of his birthday, Vencil Mares will receive a significant gift, the key to the city. 

On Friday, Nov. 8, Mares, owner of the Taylor Café, will be presented the key to the city along with a proclamation designating Nov. 10, also his birthday, “Vencil Mares Day” in Taylor. 

The ceremony will be begin a 10 a.m. at the Taylor Café, 101 N. Main St. Mayor Brandt Rydell will present key and proclamation. 

Mares was born in Cistern and served as a medic in the Army during World War II. After the war, he worked at Southside Market in Elgin before purchasing the building for the Taylor Café in 1948, and the restaurant has been open for more than 70 years.

The Taylor Café has been awarded the Texas Treasure Business Award by the Texas Historical Commission. Mares, as well as the Taylor Café, has been featured in numerous articles including in Texas Monthly. He was also featured in a Chevy commercial aired during the 2014 Super Bowl. 

The public is welcome to attend the ceremony honoring Mares.
