The historic Gardner Cemetery in Circleville, also known as the Circleville Cemetery, was severely vandalized in the past few weeks.

At least five headstones, dating back to the Civil War era, were destroyed. One of them is missing a large section, which makes it impossible to repair.

The vandalism was discovered by the Cemetery Restoration Volunteers (CRV) during a recent maintenance visit, one of many abandoned cemeteries maintained on a rotational basis in Williamson County.

The volunteers work under the direction of Williamson County Historical Commission Cemetery Committee Chair, Wayne Ware.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the vandalism.

The CRV asks the perpetrators to return the missing headstone section to the cemetery so that repairs can be made.
