Monday crash results in death, police investigating

A motorcycle accident in Taylor claimed the life of an Elgin man earlier this week.

According to the Taylor Police Department, officers are investigating a collision that resulted in the death of Jacob Shelp, 28, of Elgin.

Police report that on Monday, May 3, just before 9 p.m., officers responded to a call of a two-vehicle collision in the 5000 block of west Second Street.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a motorcycle, driven by Shelp, hit a U-Haul truck, driven by Melanie Cunningham. Shelp was believed to be headed east on west Second and hit the truck that had entered the intersection headed north from FM 3349.

Cunningham was not injured, however, Shelp was pronounced dead on the scene. No other details have been released and an autopsy has been ordered.

“We don’t expect any new details until (the results),” said Commander Joseph Branson.

Anyone with any information related to the collision is urged to contact Officer Thomas Sirkis at the Taylor Police Department at 512-352-5551.

This was Taylor’s first fatal collision of the year.
