Lady Ducks volleyball freezes Achieve

AUSTIN — Taylor High School varsity volleyball improved to 6-1 in District 22-4A matches this week with a dominant victory on the road at Austin Achieve High School. First-year head coach Rylee Davis and her Lady Ducks won with ease in three straight sets: 25-9, 25-5 and 25-12.

“I think we have a plethora of personality on our team and it’s so fun to watch them all come out during a game when they’re determined towards a collective goal,” Davis said.

Against this Lady Polar Bears squad, the Lady Ducks were in complete control from start to finish of this match to pick up yet another district win to their tally. Taylor senior Ansley Reed and junior Haley Harms led the way for the Lady Ducks with nine kills apiece, while senior Hannah Wamble added five aces, eight digs and four kills of her own.

Lady Ducks sophomore Makenna Watson continues to be an unsung hero for Taylor volleyball this 2023 season as she had another outstanding all-around match with a whopping 11 aces, 10 serves received and eight digs.

“Makenna has been an absolute rock for us this year,” Davis said. “Not only does she play an extremely vital role for us, which is not always a glorified role, but she does it with such ease and positivity. Kind of the same as setters, the mental bounce-back game for liberos has to be strong. You’re in the game almost the entire time, and as a former libero myself, it is so easy to get down on yourself when the next two contacts rely on you so heavily. She keeps herself positive and always is such a calming presence on the court.”

Taylor senior Camryn Nunamaker had a match-high 12 assists and three aces against Achieve, while sophomore Peyton Wamble had 11 assists and four aces of her own.

After what should be another easy match victory on Friday night in a home match vs. Manor New Tech High School, the Lady Ducks (24-12 overall record) will have a pivotal district road match at 6 p.m. on Oct. 10 at La Grange High School. Taylor won in three straight sets at home back on Sept. 15 vs. the Lady Leopards in the first meeting: 25-22, 25-13 and 25-22.
