Our beloved Gussie Eugene Brieger, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018. He was born June 24, 1930, in Taylor, to parents, Gussie Edmund Brieger and Ethel Walker Brieger.
He was a graduate of Taylor High School and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Texas Tech University.
Eugene was a proud veteran serving four years in the US Air Force as a Staff Sargent stationed in Saudi Arabia during the Korean War.
He was employed with the Texas Employment Commission, was an active member of the International Association of Personnel in Employment Securement (IAPES), the American Cut Glass Association-Lone Star Chapter, the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors and a longtime supporter of the San Antonio Symphony.
Eugene was a devout member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio.
Eugene was affectionately known for his ready laugh and the perpetual twinkle in his eye. He loved people, travel and life, traveling to 30 countries after his retirement and was an avid collector of cut glass.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his spouse, John Herndon James Sykes, whom he met in 1963.
Eugene is survived by his brothers, Donald Brieger (Joyce) and Gerald Brieger (Barbara); nephews, Clay Brieger, Duane Brieger and Bradford Brieger; niece, Julie Blackstock; several grand and great-grand nieces and nephews; along with many wonderful friends, especially Barry Mitchell and Steve Manuel.
Visitation will be held Monday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough Ave. in San Antonio.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1018 E. Grayson, in San Antonio.
A graveside service will be held Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Taylor.
